getting closer to row 70

almost to row 70 (only 8 rows to go) and thinking about the decreases and the start of the fronts...people have been chattering about the front band...

Why couldn't it be knit along with the front, instead of separately? Wouldn't that make the front band the same exact length as the fronts?

Actually, the pattern is written for the band to be knitted along. The problem with this is that bands knit this way tend to "splay" out, you can see this a little bit in the photo. Over time it can get worse. There have been a couple of solutions mentioned along our merry way. One is to knit it separately and sew it on. Another is to knit the bands only on double pointed needles a size or two smaller than the needles for the body, as you knit the body. Another is to knit some rows (say every fourth or fifth-and I have never done this so anyone that wants to chime in.....) as short rows, across to the band and turn before working the band, working whichever short row method you prefer (wrapping the sts or whatever). I haven't decided which method I am going to use. I'm hoping someone works them before me so I can see the advantages of each. :)

I try to knit the bands extra tight and it seems to work for me. One number smaller needles would perhaps be even better because I knit tight anyway. I have not tried shortrows for this, but you better swarth:) No problem for you Teresa, I guess. Monica

Why do you suppose the band "splays out"? Is it just because it's on the edge of the knitting? Wouldn't a selvage stitch help that? Yes, No? What about doing a few extra and sewing them (a button band "facing" as it were?)....

I have worked short rows before, but can't remember how I did it. It was on shaping for a shawl collar on a men's sweater. It turned out well, but the sweater was done 10 years ago, and I don't remember.

I'll google, no problem there, but some hints as to how it would be handled in this circumstance would be helpful.
