Checking In
After my struggles with the "wrong side" of my swatch, I have decided to work this sweater in the round. I'm steeking the armholes and will sew the sleeves in "after". Also I've decided to do the buttonband later. I've pasted the individual chart sections in their proper order on another piece(s) of paper (24" for one-half of total garment). I'm working the charts right to left and then, after reaching the center back panel, working left to right. I've finished the ribbing and two rounds of the pattern(s). If I just don't forget which way I'm going (and/or get dizzy) think this will work!
I'm using Cascade 220 and #3 very long circular.

hi Jane -
about reversing the direction of the patterns - you could copy the charts on clear plastic sheets (all copy shops have them) and simply flip them over when you get to the center back, thereby avoiding much confusion! Personally, I couldn't do it the way you are, I would get lost pretty fast, not to mention that it would drive me to drink - oh wait, its already done that!!

Another way to reverse the patterns: if you have a scanner for your computer, scan the page into a .jpg file and use a photo editor (e.g. Photoshop or Microsoft photo editor) to reverse the image. You can also use the software to enlarge and/or sharpen the charts.
If you're really ambitious you can copy/paste the repeats of each chart to extend the overall chart beyond the 34 rows shown in the book. I did that and it was time-consuming, but well worth it IMO.

Judith,
Thank you, I just figured out my problem with reversing. I don't have a scanner so I was having a problem turning the fish around when I was repeating the charts beyond A (purl and knit sides. Actually I only did four rows beyond the ribbing and I knew I had a problem so time to rip. Is this how all charts are written? - this is mind boggling to me that they can't print the entire charts. It would just be one more page in their magazine.
I finally figure out how to knit the flying fish and now I can't read charts arghhh

Is it possible to knit these cables from the top down? Just trying to come up with all the options open to me as I attempt to change this pattern around a bit. Thanks.

I copied the cables, enlarging, taping...the works. When I finish a row, I cross it off with a Sharpie marker.
Works for me!

I'm doing the sweater in the round, too, but then I'm going to do the shaping for front and back armholes separately. As for steeking, doesn't it matter that these are raglan sleeves and not just set in sleeves? That's why I'm splitting front and back at the sleeves.

Julie, why don't you do the sleeves at the same time as the body after you get to the underarms? Seems to me pretty easy if you chart out the decreases, but then by the time you get there (you'd have to knit the sleeves before you did the join) you would be so familiar with the pattern it would be simple. That's what I am going to do altho my row guage different than the pattern call for so I used Sweater Wizard to tell me the decreases in my guage.
