Chart Reading Question - help

Before I buy some clear sheets to copy the pattern I need to understand the chart reading a little better. I started Row 1 of the back and following the chart from right to left thru chart A - then I finished the back by following the chart from the beginning of "B" left to right. On the purl side, I read the chart from right to left also but finished at the end of"B" and then read left to right starting with "A". I am not sure if this is right because I think some of the symbols (i.e. famous flying fish) should also be turned when I am doing this. I think the transparent sheets will help me because I can reverse them but could some explain if I should also turn the symbols. I am sorry I am not understanding this better. On a very happy note I did master all of the symbols.

Thank you so much.

Good luck I give up I can NOT decipher the chart at all I have spent untold HOURS DAYS trying. I had hoped this KAL along would help but it's not so if anyone wants to buy the pattern book send me an e-mail. tenizmom@aol.com

Wow! There are some real mental gymnastics required for that. I think the best thing is to try to get a copy of the chart reversed and tape or paste it so that you have a full chart reading from chart H over to chart A and then the reversed version of charts B back through H all across. Then you can always read the right side of the charts from right to left and the wrong side from left to right.

Once you see the charts flipped to mirror image (charts H-B,A,B-H*mirrored*) you will see that the travelling sts are the same, just worked in the opposite direction.

Clear? Right! As Mud!

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

I commented last night but I guess it didn't make it into my post. I accomplished 4 rows last night by reversing the symbols when I needed to on both the right and wrong sides on the back of the sweater. Teresa, you are right definite mental gymnastics but I am happy I understand it now. I still may copy the pattern on the clear sheets just to make it faster (it seems slow going right now) but building brain cells isn't a bad idea either.

Lisa, I am sorry it didn't work out. There is a lot of prep work and studying before you even begin to knit the pattern (at least for me there was, probably because I have only been knitting a couple of years).

I found no problem working the charts in "mirrored" fashion. I kept a graph on the margin of what stitch to work if the fish was leaning in whichever direction, then reversed the graph for the "mirrored" sections. Works like a charm.

So a left leaning fish is a front cross on the first half of the RS, but is a back cross on the mirrored half.

And so on. I've been able to "read" the chart backward (except on the 6 stitch cable section, in which I have to keep track of where I put the cable needle on the first half and the opposite side on the mirrored half), so that my cables are all mirrored properly.

I've been having fun. Hoping to get more done this weekend.

Too bad about Susan--I hope that someone can get to her to help her figure it out.

Tenna,

Thank you for the response. Actually last night when I finally figured it out, I did exactly what you did. Used a graph at the side and reversed the symbols on the mirrored parts. I also have to stop and think about the 6 stitch cable section when I move my cable needle from front to back :)

At least on some of the charts, you can get them to mirror by starting at a different place in the chart. THese would be the ones that go first in one direction and later in another direction. sorry I can't be more explicit here. I am at work and the book is at home. Keeps me from knitting when I am supposed to be working except for the Rowan Araney sweater that I work on at lunch. ha ha
